A Good Set of Eight 19th Century Yew Wood Windsor Armchairs

The low backs, having a central stylised fleurs de lys splat, with three long tapered spindles to each side. Three shorter tapered spindles sit just behind the turned arm support. The shaped saddle seats are of elm, and the single ring turned legs are morticed into the underside. Crinoline stretcher and two short “torpedoes” connect the legs.

All the constructional techniques displayed in the chairs suggest they were made by George Nicholson of Rockley, circa 1835. One chair bears the impressed mark “Nicholson Rockley” to the side of the seat.

All the chairs are of a lovely rich patinated yew wood colour.
